Even if you don't use your computer for gaming, you may still want a few performance statistics. PCMark 8 is an excellent alternative if you don't want to abuse your computer with a traditional benchmarking utility. The software serves the same purpose, but instead of using shiny 3D graphics, it simulates the usage of web browsers and other applications, to test your machine.

Besides the paid version, PCMark 8 is available in a free edition as well, which comes with only a few minor limitations. The software can be installed on Windows 7 and Windows 8 and its hardware requirements shouldn't be a challenge for any modern day computer. Also, there is no need to install any prerequisite tools.

The main user interface has an elegant design and its controls are very easy to master. You can switch from the welcome screen to other tabs, on which you will find various predefined benchmark tests, test results, logs and options for general configurations. The program allows you to choose a test for common home computers, but you can also opt for expert and professional tests, simple office productivity tests and others.

Everything on the user interface is well explained, especially when it comes to the available benchmark tests. They are separated in a clear manner, so you won't make any mistakes. Also, each test is very well explained and the best part is that the information is placed right in front of you when you select a test, so you don't have to go through a thick manual to find the information you need.

Each test can be started with a single click. What's more, you can choose to start a test in conventional or accelerated mode. You will be able to see various operations on your desktop during a screen. For example, the program will automatically open a browser window and it will surf through various pages. It is also worth mentioning that PCMark 8 is capable of combining performance tests with battery life measurements. This means that you will be able to obtain performance statistics according to your laptop's battery capabilities.

Pros

The software comes with various predefined benchmark tests. You can start any test with a single click. Besides benchmarking a computer's performance, the program can also measure a laptop's battery life.

Cons

The setup file is quite large and it takes some time to install the program. With PCMark 8, it doesn't take more than one click to obtain detailed and accurate benchmark results for a home or office computer.
